Wategos & Little Wategos Beach

Located just north west of Cape Byron and the lighthouse, Wategos Beach is one of Byron’s best beaches. Named after a local Indigenous family, Wategos Beach is a small, protected beach that is an essential pilgrimage site for surfers and swimmers alike.

A safe, sheltered spot ideal for children and families set below the lighthouse, Watego’s also has free barbecues and toilets. The amenities make it a perfect spot to cook up your lunch when you want to indulge in an all day beach hang.

A busy and popular spot for longboard surfers you will often see some of the most graceful men and women trimming down the line when the swell is up. A great spot to see dolphins and witness the migrating whales breach from May to September.

A short walk over the headland towards on your way to the lighthouse the boardwalk will eventually bring you to Little Watego’s, Australia’s most easterly beach. Often overlooked but not to be missed this quiet and secluded beach is one of Byron’s true gems.
