Essential Eats: Doma Cafe
Just 40 minutes drive from Byron Bay and a little off the beaten track lies Doma Cafe. Nestled in the Byron Bay hinterland town of Federal you’ll find the savvy young Japanese crew of Takayuki, Takashi, Aki and Shine turning out modern Japanese/Australian food.
Try Tataki beef, Miso Eggplant Salad and the Haloumi Cheese Tempura with Tomato Pickles the fresh Salmon Sushi Cones, or if you fancy something sweet, the Green Tea panna cotta. There are also homemade burgers like the delicious Chicken Katsu, hot chips, and a daily specials board to choose from. Servings are generous and the prices are fair. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are all available.
Aside from a small traditional Japanese doma room seating is mostly outside so keep that in mind on wet weather days. With its increasing popularity expect it to busy during the lunch rush hour, especially on weekends, and during peak holiday periods. Rest assured however, the wait is always worth it.
